ABOUT

POSITION: Chair Department of Medical Biochemistry at LIC-Leiden University since 2015, following his position as chair of the Department of Biochemistry at the AMC/University of Amsterdam (2000-14).

WORKING/RESEARCH FOCUS: Hans Aerts focuses his investigations on glycosphingolipids in health and disease, particularly in relation to inherited lysosomal storage disorders (e.g. Gaucher disease) and the acquired metabolic syndrome. His interest in these fields includes also biomarker discovery, diagnosis and therapies. Novel chemical tools are employed in his fundamental and applied research.

He has published over 350 peer-reviewed papers and >100 book chapters and other scientific papers. He supervised 43 completed PD theses (14 ongoing). His H-index is 72 WOS; 77 Research Gate; 88 Google Scholar.  His work is >1000/y cited during the last decade.

He has been the recipient of various (inter) national governmental research grants, most recently the NWO-BBOL Research Grant ‘Glucosylceramide’.

He is co-founder and honorary president of the EWGGD, a society comprising all major Gaucher clinical and research centres and national patient societies worldwide.
